Illinois State Police statistics released today show statewide crime up slightly with violent suburban crime rising. Murder up 20.9 percent and robberies up 7.4 percent, while The Star area saw no significant rise in homicides.
Governors State University will keep facilities open for about 2,800 YMCA members and the public after approving a preliminary fee structure. The June 22 YMCA closing announcement triggered complaints, with 60 to 100 part time staff facing job loss.
A plan to expand Senior Wheels service across Bloom Bremen Rich and Thornton townships to allow non resident trips for seniors and the disabled is under study. Pace would provide two extra buses for intertownship trips though current buses are aging with over 100000 miles and one loaner has burned recently.
Chicago Heights fights a U S Justice Department lawsuit charging housing discrimination under the Fair Housing Amendments Act. The suit, consolidated with a private firm's bid to build a home for 15 mentally retarded adults, centers on denying a special use permit for Residential Facilities Management Specialists at Broadway and Carpenter. Residents opposed the plan, and officials dispute the claims, stating support for the disabled and alleging the case targets zoning laws. U S Attorney Anton Valukas says the case could set a nationwide civil rights precedent as national media cover the dispute.
Preparations start for the Chicago Heights Birthday Festival August 18 20 at Bloom Market Plaza with entries to August 14. The event features carnival rides food beer live entertainment and a Civil War reenactment. Parade August 20 at 1 pm follows Chicago Road Dixie Highway to 10th Street.
