Workmen tore out booths and partitions at the McDonald’s where gunman James Oliver Huberty killed 21 people before a police sharpshooter ended the incident. McDonald’s officials closed the outlet and await word on its future.
A propane leak in a high pressure tank at Union Oil refinery caused a catastrophic blast. Fifteen workers were confirmed dead with two more missing presumed dead. Officials warn the plant may never regain full productivity without government and industry reforms.

Rich Township High School District 227 discusses the district’s 1984-85 goals. The goals program uses an annual plans committee of 16 including four administrators, four teachers, four students and four parents. Five goals proposed for the year include evaluating instructional programs and middle track methods, evaluating the man relations program, improving school community relations, and expanding student representation on committees from four to six.
The Matteson community relations commission will hold meetings in each neighborhood to discuss alleged racial steering and impacts on property values. Trustee John Rangel urged proactive action, starting with Woodgate, and residents from Applewood and Oakwood formed a combined homeowners association after a joint gathering.
Nine area communities including University Park Matteson Glenwood Hazel Crest Richton Park Calumet Park Blue Island and Park Forest face a federal state housing lawsuit. Officials say enforcement will continue with no changes unless court action dictates otherwise.
The Markham Harvey reservoir will relieve 1700 Har vey Markham and South Holland homeowners and protect over 6600 residences and 142 businesses in the south suburbs. It sits on a Teacre site east of the Tri-State and north of 167th in Markham, 28 feet deep with 27 acres and 567 acre feet capacity. MSD Commissioner Connie Peters said funds came as a surprise but the project is prioritized due to advanced planning and readiness.
