South suburban lawmakers mostly opposed a tax package passed by the Illinois General Assembly with close votes in both chambers. The plan, proposed by Gov. James Thompson and shaped by House Republicans, would raise about $963 million via a 20 percent income tax increase for a year, a permanent penny on the sales tax, and phased tax relief and food medicine exemptions.
Richton Park residents and officials dominated a planning commission meeting focused on a 1,056 square foot Lakewood subdivision model home by Burnside Construction president George Arquilla Jr. Arquilla outlined market splits for homes from 1,000 to over 1,900 square feet and explained pricing aims while noting tax losses on unsold lots and a sale price of 62,900 to fit a smaller model.
In Springfield area, Democratic Sens. Richard Kelly and George Langmeister voted yes on a three year phased gas tax hike raising the state rate from 7.5 to 13 cents. Republicans William Mahar and Aldo DeAngelis voted no as the bill, passed by the House earlier, moved to final passage 33-26. The plan also raises auto registration fees and faces opposition for its impact on lower incomes and trucking costs.
District 159 board approves a 54012 package for this summer's building grounds work and new furnishings across four schools. Improvements include playgrounds at Neil Armstrong in Richton Park, a safety fence on Amy drive, and drainage upgrades under Yates school roof. New staff and absences monitoring policy discussed. lunch fund balance noted.
