The nation endures the harshest freeze of the century in Florida halving citrus crops, boosting orange juice prices. U S Attorney Dan Webb announced a federal grand jury indicting eight Chicago area tax protesters, most from the south suburbs, under a program charging felonies rather than misdemeanors. In Springfield, Illinois, Schools Chief defended a 4000 payment for four State Board staff to Las Vegas for an eight hour meeting on a three year study of school finance. The Illinois Supreme Court ruled trust fund income can be garnished for delinquent child support and that municipalities aren’t liable for damages to homes built to code.
After public outcry, three trustees changed their January 7 decision to award the refuse collection contract. The board, in a 5-1 vote, reapportioned the contract to Slager and Schick, Ltd. By January 11 veto, residents’ letters and calls influenced the reversal, though village President Stricker noted strong resident support for Star Disposal. Trustees then unanimously approved reconsideration and again moved to award to Slager and Schick.
The Richton Park library district plans an April referendum to raise the tax rate from 15 to 29 cents per $100 of equalized valuation. Rising costs and an 82 percent rise in library use prompt the move, First since 1974. Librarian Patrick Nevins announced the decision at a village board session. Voters will decide on April 2. Nevins emphasized that approval of authority does not guarantee maximum levying. The district, relying on grants and fines, expects higher operating revenues if the rate is raised, potentially approaching $91,000 current funds would deplete with expansion.
About 100 Matteson District 162 parents attended a board work session to hear possible reorganizations aimed at alleviating crowding at Matteson Elementary and declining enrollment at Arcadia. The board may use a paired school concept, but no decisions have been made.
Petitions for Matteson and Richton Park municipal races closed Monday with a final candidate slate released. Matteson lists incumbent Village President Mark Stricker first on the ballot with six trustee hopefuls, and library board candidates vying for two six year seats. Voters face bond referendums for a new village library and a new police station. In Richton Park, candidates include Village President Mull Reeves and challenger Rudolph Banovich for president, plus trustees and two unopposed library seats. one late filing was rejected for missing the 5 pm deadline.
