Legislators push for Feb 1 utility rate cut in Illinois
Freshman Representatives McCarthy and Scully propose moving ComEd residential rate relief from Aug 1 to Feb 1, 1998. They cite Democrat leadership in Springfield and IRMA pressure, while Mahar and Novak defend the existing timetable under the deregulation law. The group seeks quicker relief for households as ComEd faces a broader open market transition by 2002.

Energy efficiency grants eyed in deregulation bill push
Illinois lawmakers Sen. William Mahar and Rep. Phil Novak back a deregulation follow up proposing grants and credits funded by utilities. Under the plan ComEd and others would contribute about 30 million dollars annually for five years, with DCCA certified projects aiding renters and owners and tax credits of up to 25 percent available 1999 to 2003 totaling 250 million. Statewide sales tax relief on certified products would also begin in 1999.
