GOP Primary In 11th District Sees Seven Candidates
The March Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District pits Sam Panayotovich against six rivals from central and western areas. Candidates include Gerald Kinney, James O Connell, Gerald Weller, and Robert Herbolsheimer, with two newcomers Jeffery Tomczak and John Leinenweber. Panayotovich, a former state legislator and liquor commission associate director, lost by 368 votes in 1992 and argues Republicans must field the strongest contender to beat the Democrat this fall. Herbolsheimer, an environmentalist and private attorney, emphasizes name recognition and district knowledge, while Weller highlights his Grundy and LaSalle bases and crime and economy as priorities. Kinney pins hopes on Will County leadership and independent voters, citing tax concerns for the self employed. O Connell, a former Will County recorder and Joliet Port Authority director, touts broad business experience and the economy as key issues. Tomczak, a New Lenox attorney and former narcotics unit chief, focuses on crime and education. The field reflects deep cluster of local ties across Joliet, Will County, and surrounding counties.
