PADS expands cold weather shelter efforts in south suburbs

Volunteer coordinator Roe Jaworski notes fewer homeless seek night shelters as daytime warmth draws them to libraries and other venues. Two sites operate nightly at Hazel Crest United Methodist Church and Flossmoor Community Church, with plans to open a daytime shelter at Christian Vision Center in Chicago Heights once enough volunteers join 3.5 hour shifts. The group reports overall increases in shelter usage compared to last year.

Suburban towns seek FCC cable rate regulation

Cook County youth program aims to curb drug use

A new Juvenile Deferred Prosecution Program for first time juvenile offenders will start in Bridgeview at the Fifth Municipal District Circuit Court next month. Cook County Sheriff Michael Sheahan proposed countywide expansion, with Judge Martin Berry noting a three part program of two and a half hours per session. Referrals come from police prosecutors and judges. participants are 12 to 20, mostly 15 or 16.
