Appeals ruling could shorten Masters case sentence

A 7th Circuit panel ruled that Judge Zagel erred in applying 1992 resentencing guidelines for Michael Corbitt, possibly enabling parole after serving a third of the original 20 years. Corbitt, ex Willow Springs police chief, helped plot Diane Masters murder in 1982 and remains tied to related extortion and racketeering infractions. The panel urged using 1989 guidelines, which would allow earlier release, with parole decisions by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
