Judge rules sergeant in custody case did not mislead officials
Will County judge ruled Sgt. John Howell did not mislead authorities when he took 7 month old Joshua Morrell from his parents under a New Mexico order. The Morrells sought criminal contempt charges over the action, but the judge found no court order violation. Howell, who had an extramarital affair with Morrell, later had paternity tests showing 99 percent likelihood he is the father. The case includes questions about local vs out of state custody orders and the validity of orders used to return the child. A March 29 paternity hearing was scheduled.
