Transportation Growth and Suburban Rail Overhaul Plans
West of the Calumet expressway I-80 sees 72500 vehicles daily while I-294 shows 70000 west of the junction. The Calumet expressway I-94 carries 78500 near Sibley boulevard and 37100 south of I-80. I-57 counts 50100 at Sibley and 33300 at U S 30. Tri State tollway near 159th street processes 54100. Commuter rail advances include ICG electric division serving 30600 daily on 78 trains, Rock Island line 24100 daily on 57 trains, and Norfolk and Western line 3100 daily with 98 7 percent on time. The CSSMTD helped pioneer Highliner cars and funded initial fleets. RTA rebuilt Rock Island with new locomotives and tracks, costing over 100 million. New stations and parking are planned at Richton Park Hazel Crest and 153rd street in Orland Park. Public transit governance shifts give RTA authority over CTA, Commuter Rail, and Suburban Bus divisions. The south suburbs gain services via TMH and SBD subsidized routes with strong ridership gains and paratransit support.
