A proposed joint use agreement between Richton Park village and Matteson School District 162 moved forward after village trustees discussed fixes. IRMA coverage and contractual liability were debated, with safeguards to equalize protection for both parties and limits on village liability for sponsored activities.
School District 159 board approved a tentative 1983 84 budget of about 5.58 million with spending in education transportation and upkeep. The increase relies on $120 more per pupil state aid while local funding provides about half of revenues. The board corrected tax bill errors and announced staff changes and new hires.
Gus Gerolimos, a 40 year old Lynwood resident, sits on the roof of his 7-11 at Torrence and 223rd to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. South and southwest suburb shopping centers show stronger sales tax growth than mixed mini malls during the recession. A Star Publications survey of five communities finds Orland Park and Matteson rely heavily on major malls like Orland Square and Lincoln Mall, while new small businesses also boost revenues. Orland Park and Matteson report sales tax contributions over 50 percent of general operating revenues, despite a drop or fluctuation in other areas. Finance Director Judith Goral cites a 2.8 percent rise in 1983 and 28.7 percent rise from other businesses, aided by Dominick's Jewel Walgreen's and new restaurants. The village planning commission is active amid this economic development push.
Crete township officials plan to request monthly soil and water testing at the John Sexton landfill on Goodenow road from the Illinois EPA after Trustee Fred A. Pehrkon raised concerns. The group also will notify the Will County health department and Crete and Beecher villages.
Richton Park residents will discuss last week's Illinois Appellate Court decision allowing Sexton Contractors to resume landfill operations at a public meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. Village trustees and village attorneys will attend at the village hall to answer questions before a closed session on legal options follows.
