Former Chicago Heights resident awarded WWII Soldier's Medal
Frank Malkewicz, a former Chicago Heights resident, was awarded the Soldier's Medal for Heroism for actions on April 27, 1945, in northern Burma. As a medical with the Fifth Battery, Field Artillery, he saved five men after a howitzer accident. His commanding officer had recommended the medal, but it never materialized, possibly due to records lost in a fire. Now a Stone Lake Wisconsin resident, he received the medal this past June from his congressman on the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa.
