Schmuhl School Moves Toward New Habitat For History
A crowd watched Schmuhl School inch across Route 30 on Wednesday as Commonwealth Edison crews lifted wires. The one room school will become a museum in the Hickory Creek Nature Preserves, after decades on the Route 30 corner. Community support funded a $177,000 effort, with plans to restore the classroom and display Native artifacts and period items. The move, cost $37,000, marks the start of fundraising for ongoing museum operations and landscaping with a future ground‑breaking planned.
