Metra breaks ground for Blue Island station upgrade
Metra kicks off a 2.8 million project on the Blue Island branch Electric District replacing the 1926 era station with a brick headhouse and 288 foot precast platform. The plan includes improved accessibility, a new operations building, parking, upgraded connections to Rock Island and Electric District stations, and ADA compliance funded by federal and state agencies. Local officials including Lowell Anderson and Mayor Donald Peloquin attended with contractors A E Berg Co and design firms Upchurch and Delta Engineering. Completion aimed for 2001 with 18 months of construction and ongoing service during work.
