Death of Col W L Laughlin Proprietor in Fredericksburg
Col W L Laughlin aged 65 died suddenly in a hotel bath room while washing a pet dog at the Exchange Hotel where he owned property. A native of Pennsylvania he served as first lieutenant in the Second Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. Surviving are his widow two daughters Miss Byrd Laughlin and Mrs K C Johnson and a son.

After 23 hours the jury found Angelo Hamilton guilty of first degree murder for shooting Mrs. Sallie Hix last June. Duncan Drysdale filed a motion for a new trial and Judge Christian set arguments for November 17. Juries had previously failed to agree.

Spinner Escapes Lynching Near Cifax
Deputy Sheriff Mc Ghee of Bedford County brought Thurman Spinner to Bedford City jail after a mob of about 50 from Cifax attempted to Lynching. Spinner killed Charles W. Noell with an ax as they returned from opossum hunting last Friday. Noell died Tuesday after failing to regain consciousness. The alleged motive sprang from a torn shirt in a prior scuffle.

Tunnel collapse delays Southern Railway work here
A sixty foot tunnel section on the Southern Railway caved in during blasting. Workers were nearby but escaped with no injuries as rock and earth fell after the blast. The unfinished tunnel around the city will push back construction only a few days.
