The second annual census of commercial organizations operating in the Southern States, completed by the Southern Commercial Congress, lists a total of 1,598 firms. This marks a gain of 373 organizations over the previous count.

Riot in Bloomfield Over Fight Bet Cleared by Police

In Bloomfield New Jersey a small riot erupted over a Johnson Jeffries fight bet between George Gray a colored chauffeur and Arthur Springfield a white chauffeur. The wager required the loser to wheel the winner in a wheelbarrow and a crowd joined with missiles and eggs as the vehicle rolled toward Center. Police intervened and the bet was abandoned.

In Richmond Virginia the May death tally shows whites 101 and colored 114 among 215 city deaths. With a two thirds white population the colored rate is double the white rate, driven by illnesses including consumption heart trouble measles Bright's disease and typhoid.

15000 Women Strike In International Ladies Garment Workers Union

New York reports 15000 women going out as the ILGWU calls a walkout at 2 PM after a committee of forty five declared the strike. About 3000 had already quit yesterday. Employers split on recognition and better conditions, with some prepared to sign agreements. Strikes may spread to Cleveland and Chicago if unfinished goods are shipped. In addition, Rep George C Sturgiss was re nominated by acclamation for a third term in West Virginia.
