Insurance men convicted in Virginia rate conspiracy
In Newport News Virginia Dan B G Harris president A B Har general manager and twenty one Southeastern Underwriters Association members were convicted in Police Court of unlawfully conspiring to control rates in the city. They were fined 500 dollars with costs and appeals noted. The case stems from raising rates ten percent to offset a three and one half percent city license tax. The court saw the move as retaliatory and warned the association to curb city penalties. Justice Brown called for Virginia insurance legislation though noting existing common law suffices for prosecution. Appeals will be heard in September in Corporation Court.
