The 23-year-old Miss Sarah Booth was recovered by her father from Pennsylvania State Anatomical Board after two months in storage. She had left Roanoke with Secretary Knox’s family to Pittsburgh, fell ill, died about three months ago in a Pittsburgh hospital, and her body, embalmed and held in cold storage, was shipped back to Roanoke for burial seventy one days after death as the board prepared it for dissection. No relatives were claimed to be available.
Richmond special reports American Locomotive Works orders to build a mammoth dredge and big pontoon for Alexandria Egypt to work on the Upper Nile. The project will resume idle labor, take ten months to complete, and parts will be shipped by donkey over a 1200 mile Nile route.
A massive fire in Big Stone Gap started above Taylor's store and consumed the Goodlow block. Mrs. Grown’s three story brick building, the Eugene Hotel, stores such as Kellyman’s, the Red Star Clothing House, the J. W. Kelley drugstore, and others were destroyed along with the Adams Express office. The United States Court Building suffered severe damage in the blaze, with total losses around 125000 dollars.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad launches a new Richmond to Pittsburg Pullman car service. The daily train travels via the Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac line to Washington, except Saturdays, saving about ten hours over the old Richmond to Pittsburg route with arrivals in Pittsburg early next morning.
Judge George W. Morris of the Corporation Court and former Virginia state senator collapsed en route to his office. Aged 50, born December 13 1857 in New York City. He served eight years in the Virginia Senate and succeeded Judge Duke on the Charlottesville corporation bench. He presided over the trial of J Samuel McCue for the murder of his wife.
Surprise rocked Berryville Clark County as Sheriff W Smallwood resigned after long service. He cited private business as the reason for quitting the eight year term. Circuit Judge F W Harrison appointed George T Leir, son of former U S Marshal George W Leir, to succeed him.
Petersburg notices Mrs Lida Bell Woody widow of Thomas H Woody dies at about 62 from apoplexy. She was among Petersburgs wealthiest residents and is survived by one sister. The brief obituary notes other regional deaths including Samuel Hickok in Christiansburg a 79 year old ex Stonewall Jackson brigade member, and Mary McKeever near Capon Bridge found dead at 65 with family.
