The piece describes naval ceremony, flag signals, port entries, Cuban fortifications, shipboard routines, encounters with locals, and early impressions of Havana during the Spanish American War.
Private Joan F Lewis of Troop B Third U S Cavalry writes from Montauk Point about camp life near the Atlantic. He notes regulars and Canton and Massillon friends, improving health, cold nights, electric lights, moves toward possible front, furloughs, kindness of Massillon residents and Red Cross aid during travel. He signs off sending greetings to home.
Canton dispatch reports a border feud between Stark and Summit counties over where a shooting case will be tried. William Lahr alleges William Dickerhoff from Summit fired at him with intent to kill on Tuesday. the pair were in Stark and Summit jails respectively. The case hinges on trial location and warrants await legal decision.
Douglass Iden head miller at Wick & Justus mills was seriously injured when he fell from a streetcar on East Main Street at Center Street. He suffered scalp wounds and a severe brain concussion though the skull remained unfractured. He was taken to Hotel Conrad then to his Center Street home and will miss several days at work.
In Canton on September 24 an application for guardian appointment was filed and notice ordered in Catharine Bollin's Washington Township estate. Private real estate sale in Frederick Denions of New Berlin assignment confirmed. deed ordered. Emanuel R. Speaker appointed administrator of Elizabeth Stauffer’s Sugar Creek Township estate. Inventory and appraisement filed for Joseph Groetter of Bethlehem Township. Fourth partial account filed for Peter Albright of Massillon. Inventory and appraisement filed for Peter Kern of Alliance. Miss Bertha E. Seaman, 31, Massillon public school teacher and daughter of Mr and Mrs T Harvey Seaman, died after nearly a year of illness including typhoid fever paralysis and meningitis. Funeral at 2 pm Sunday at 51 Park Street. She taught in the B Grammar grade at West Tremont Street School and was a former Massillon High School graduate. She leaves two brothers, F H Seaman of Massillon and Willard Seaman of Cleveland.
Judge McCarty’s short Canton court session dissolves an attachment in the case of Mrs. M A Finley versus Anna George and vacates the claim for rent and board. Demurrer in Henry Hoeneger v Briggs Real Estate overruled. guardianship and real estate actions handled. several marriage licenses issued including Ross Gantz Estella McGammon and more.
Report says several farmers near McDonaldsville were swindled by clothing vendors in an old con. Each victim purchased about 50 dollars of clothes, was sent 150 dollars to select from, and signed a note for 950 later increased to 500. The clothing man had been in the area for days, with another victim east of Massillon.
Veral Wagner, age three, son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Wagner of 226 Akron Street, drowned in a cess pool in a neighboring yard between eleven and twelve Saturday morning. He had been missing for an hour before the corpse was found after the earth beneath one side gave way and the pool collapsed. Funeral scheduled for Monday.
The obituary notes the funeral of Miss Winnie Davis at St Pauls Church with hymns How Firm a Foundation Nearer My God to Thee and Art Thou Weary. Bells toll as a long procession, led by General Alonzo Phillips and staff, moves to Hollywood cemetery. Mrs Davis and her daughter kiss the deceased at the grave. Centenary Methodist choir sings Sleep Thy Last Sleep.
General Calixto Garcia visits Santiago de Cuba for the first time since July 17. General Wood and General Lawton with staff escort him into the city as crowds cheer. Garcia is accompanied by his son Colonel Calzio Garcia and Cuban officers, with receptions held at the audience room and San Carlos club. He thanks the United States in his remarks.
News from San Juan dated September 24 reports Spain is evacuating Porto Rico with good faith. Troops are turning over towns as they depart and preparations are made for a ceremonial flag raising when the American flag is hoisted. Consul Hanna urges residents to remain at home until U.S. control is complete.
Twenty four patients were moved from Red Cross hospitals to Camp Meade station to board a Reading-bound train but learned three hours would pass before departure. After a long wait the sick were returned to hospital and fear of exposure grows. General Graham is expected to order an investigation to fix responsibility for the blunder.
The Washington inquiry into the War Department's conduct in the Spanish War held its first meeting in the President's office. Eight members were present: General Grenville Dodge and others, with General McCook retired, and Urban Woodbury joining. Secretary Alger requested an investigation, and the President urged full cooperation and a clear field for the commissioners. The body adjourned to 10 o'clock Monday.
In Glendale ex Senator J Richardson was shot by his brother in law W J Haldeman at their Lockland office. Haldeman was taken into custody by the marshal. Richardson lives and may recover. A mill paper car dispute sparked the clash but witnesses report a later friendly talk on business.
Cincremati Sept 24 Dr Phineas Sanborn Connor of this city has accepted President McKinley’s invitation to serve as a member of the commission to investigate the War Department’s conduct during the Spanish American War. He will be the ninth member and previously served as Civil War assistant surgeon and was brevetted major for distinguished services.
Captain Brooks of the Chiapa is murdered by two bay pirates after they boarded near San Salero Cal. Brooks dies in a struggle while companions are wounded and the attackers escape. Nearby towns report yellow fever cases and movements of peace commissioners. Alger visits Anniston.
The Campania carrying the United States commission arrived at Queenstown on Sept 17 after a Atlantic voyage from New York. A Thursday concert raised 816 for seamen’s societies with songs like My Country Tis of Thee and God Save the Queen. Speakers praised Anglo American ties while plans to visit Paris followed.
Washington dispatches report a stern note to Spanish commissioners demanding immediate Cuban evacuation and relinquishment of sovereignty. A separate list names brigadier generals for the Santiago campaign, detailing officers and assignments across U S infantry and support units.
