Crowds fill Canton as Major McKinley hosts a large Republican campaign opening with national speakers including Governor Bushnell and Senators Thurston Cullom Hastings. Massillon delegates arrive, streets thronged, decor vivid, business suspended. reception spans parade reviews and mass gatherings.
A mass meeting of railway men and citizens elected EF D. Johnson temporary chairman and George A. Lambert secretary. A resolutions committee was formed with T. H. Sheppard H. Wu Seitz Asa Reynolds and H. B. Shannon. Speakers urged defeating free silver and praised the club’s influence. A big Music Hall meeting is planned for September 26 with A. G. Blair and W. A. Lynch among speakers. W. & L. E. Railway offers free transport for employees and spouses.
Lucinda J. Kurtz filed in Canton court to appoint a receiver for the Newsletter Printing Company detailing debts around 1500 dollars and assets not exceeding 3000 dollars. Attorneys are J. C. Garrett and Pease Baldwin Young. Also reports divorces and estate actions across Canton Massillon and Pike Township with licenses granted and final accounts filed.
Canton Ohio on Sept 19 witnessed the formal campaign opening with a massive parade and four divisions of marchers. Major McKinley and state leaders rode in open carriages as delegations from Pennsylvania West Virginia Ohio and Cleveland Ferried into town. James R. Dunn visited Canton to plan reception for a large national wheelmen delegation to meet Major McKinley on October 3. Dunn heads the wheelmen department at the Republican national committee in Chicago and aims to organize branches nationwide to support McKinley and Hobart. An estimated 2,000,000 cyclists exist with plans for 15,000 visiting Canton and more en route, signaling a major political mobilization and a likely Republican victory. Chicago railway men on passing trains bound for Canton arrive at Fort Wayne yards starting 8:40 am. A total of 100 cars from ten lines are saluted by Battery Wetzel as crowds cheer. A McKinley Hobart banner flies on a new 80 foot staff. Major McKinley speaks to about four thousand railroad telegraphers, drawing strong enthusiasm. Cincinnati delegation to follow tonight.
