Vermonters Visit Canton as McKinley Delivers Speeches

Vermont pilgrims march down Market Street with evergreen sprigs as Major McKinley welcomes 108 delegates to Canton Ohio. He lauds Vermont’s role in union history, argues against free silver and free trade, praises protective tariffs, and ties Vermont deeds to national strength. Delegations from Erie Pennsylvania, Lorain County Ohio, Rhode Island arrive later.

Lorain County Delegation Goes to Canton by Special Trains

Lorain County Mc Kinley supporters traveled to Canton on two special C. L. & W. trains arriving at 11:30 and 11:40, then moved to Fe Wayne trackage at the M. & C. junction for direct transport to Canton. A Wellington group of 250 voters rode a special W. & L. E. train and connected to Canton-Massillon electric cars. H. B. Camp of Akron spoke at the Yoder, noting slow railroad progress to West Lebanon coal fields despite favorable field prospects, with Pennsylvania Company engineers surveying the route. Also included is the financial statement of Russell & Co.’s Mutual Benefit Association and a local advertisement page.

Mystery murders haunt Altoona case in court hearing

The Altoona murder of Henry Bonnecka in April 1895 is revived as Frank Wilson and James Farrell seek new trials alleging an after discovered confession by Joseph Hildebrandt. Hildebrandt supposedly admitted to killing Bonnecka and burying $11,000 near the Pennsylvania railroad. his death in August leaves Maryland officials with the confession disputed by authorities. The district attorney produced inmates Bruce Donaldson and William Kent who testified that J Bacon witnessed Farrell and Wilson assaulting the miser. About 50 witnesses heard the hearing, which was continued today amid new reports from Moyamensing prison about another possible author of the crime.

Senator Wellington to Speak in Massillon Canton Visit Planned

A joint meeting of the McKinley Club central and finance and executive committees met in James R. Dunn's office to discuss opening campaign plans in Massillon and attending the McKinley gathering in Canton on September 18. A citizens’ meeting will precede the Canton trip and a marching club may be formed. There is a possibility Senator Wellington of Maryland will be invited to deliver the opening address in the city. Wellington is expected to head the Baltimore delegation at Canton next week with two major meetings to follow. speakers will be arranged through county and state committees.

Mrs Conlon and Brother to Inherit Colgan Estate

Wealth from the late Rev Mr Colgan of Corning New York valued over six figures will be divided between Mrs Conlon and her brother A P Conlon, with Conlon named administrator. The estate includes church bequests and gifts to societies, and the Buffalo residence will likely become their home. Russell Co which employed Conlon will seek a successor.

Increase in Mine Production Amid Machinery Use and Fatalities

Columbus dispatch reports R M Haseltine’s 1895 mine inspection summary showing coal output at 13,653,879 tons, a rise driven by machine use. Fifteen hundred miners, 447 hands in machine operation, 3,374 in blasting, and 521 accidents including 52 fatal, with production records by Jackson Perry Athens and Docking counties.

Convicts Testify on New Trial for Koons and Farrell

In Blair county courts the applications for new trials of Georg Koons alias Frank Wilson and James Farrell, convicted of the Bonnecka murder, have been fully heard. J. E. Bacon of Western Penitentiary and Joseph Hildebrandt of Maryland Penitentiary each claim they killed Bonnecka. The court will render its decision in a few days.

Athletic club movement gains young city men

A creditable enterprise forms among ambitious young men led by W. J. Roberta H. M. Fletcher Arlington Higerd and others. About twenty five members have signed to create a permanent athletic and pool club with monthly dues and initiation fee to fund body mind and morals improvement and fellowship.
