Perry Township remembers Doctors Hospital as a medical landmark. Doyle Parcell, who spent 30 years as director of plan operations, recalls arriving December 16, 1963, the day after the hospital opened. The building now lies in ruins.
A two part series recalls Doctors Hospital in Perry Township closed in 2008 and Massillon Community Hospital later Affinity Medical Center shuttered a decade afterward. Residents share memories of births and deaths tied to the facilities and the buildings as a historical timeline and photos are presented.
The Independent traces Doctors Hospital history from its December 1963 groundbreaking and 188 bed teaching status with 575 staff to its 2005 merger with Affinity Medical Center and final closure in 2008 after a merger. Demolition began October 2019 under owner plans to sell the land.
Three contenders vie for Northwest Local Schools Board of Education with two seats open. Rita Gearhart, Julie Barkey, and Sarah Ann Simon seek leadership after Mike Shreffler left the superintendent post and Dennis Lambes serves as interim. All promise a student first vision, with Gearhart calling for outside the box programs and enrollment growth, Barkey stressing continuity, and Simon urging a superintendent with student priority and district excellence.
