Albert Clymer sentenced to be hanged for murder in Burlington. A Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern train killed John Terlinde and mangled Emma Burke. California supreme court upholds 17500000 Market Street Railway bonds. Governor Morten hears extradition case of James Roberta for Philadelphia creditors. Cripple Creek marshal Kenton killed in a Goldfield fight. three others wounded.
In San Francisco on Oct 23 the trial moved to rebuttal as the prosecution called five Emanuel church trustees and other witnesses. Dr Gilbert Graham testified that Durrant asked to see lecture notes and urged him to hand over notes to fix an alibi, but Graham refused. The defense’s case is said to be swept away by this testimony and the judge expects a jury verdict by next week’s end.
A drunken dance near Beattyville Kentucky ends in fratricide when John Allen provokes a fight. Charles Simpler shoots his twin brother William Simpler, who dies with his wife at his side. The killer is found in a neighboring room drinking. Local wounding and death report follow.
Strassburg Oct. 23 Capt Edward Studer loses lodge membership for riding with another man’s wife to Canton while she offers him three hundred dollars. The piece ridicules excess, notes local business, schooling, and illness, and ends with an advertisement for Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery claiming to aid digestion and energy.
Reports from Ohio and nearby areas cover a head injury from a lime water explosion, a racial segregation lawsuit in Decatur, a catamount encounter near White Oak, and the release on bond of John B. Lindsey in a murder case. Also noted are a house fire in Lockland, a large defalcation at Findlay bank, factory wage increases, a couple injured in Millersburg, a devastating prairie fire near Forman, and a fatal Panhandle train crash at Miller's station with four victims from Youngstown.
In Massillon on October 26 1895 a miners mass meeting is called by J J Mosser and A L Williams secretary. Perry Grange No 694 adopts memorial resolutions for Sister Stump who died October 13 1895 and orders mourning and minutes pages inscribed.
