Paris report says a man tried to scale the Elysee wall early Tuesday to reach the palace garden hoping to assassinate President Loubet. He was arrested armed with a poignard and a revolver and identified as a dangerous anarchist with three prior convictions, including two for making explosive devices.
A midnight blaze at the Chicago sugar refinery on Taylor street and the Chicago river destroyed the plant. Police estimated that 10 to 12 workers perished, with the exact death toll unresolved by nightfall.
Manila reports a one million dollar gold loss to the insular government as ten million in silver is carried. Further declines could worsen the loss and many firms shift to gold. Washington notes Mrs. Adam Gilbert Dennis, assaulted at home on December 9, remains dying with no clue to her attacker despite police efforts.

Mitchell notifies 147000 coal miners to report for work Thursday as an arbitration commission named by President Roosevelt to decide all issues ends the long strike. Union leaders hail the decision and hope for lasting industrial peace with workers urged to return to mining.
Governor Stone stated that Pennsylvania national guard troops will remain in the coal regions while necessary. He said no arbitrary recall date exists and that ground commanders will judge when it is safe to start withdrawing gradually. Preparations for the November vote were underway if troops stay longer.

Pittsburg official Willis L. King signaled a new 125 mile railroad route to Lake Erie named the Pittsburg Niles and Western. The line would connect with the Monongahela Connecting railroad, pass Carnegie area, cross the Ohio at Smiths Ferry, follow Racoon creek, travel near Poland and Youngstown, cross the Mahoning at Niles, and head northeast toward the Lake Erie and Ohio River Ship Canal. Estimated cost about 14 million dollars with surveys already completed and property purchased at Elk Harbor on Lake Erie. The Jones & Laughlin Steel company denied plans for furnaces or mills outside Pittsburg.
Harrisburg Oct 22 General John W Schall of Norristown was appointed adjutant general of the Grand Army of the Republic by Adjutant General Stewart who was elected commander in chief at Washington. J H H Hilcomb of Philadelphia Post 51 becomes assistant adjutant general at headquarters in Independence Hall Philadelphia and Charles Burrows of Post 28 New Jersey department is named quartermaster general.
Dr. George D. Stewart attending surgeon at Belle Vue Hospital stitched a stab wound to the heart of Mrs Annie Kingsley Monday night and reports say she will recover. Her husband allegedly plunged the knife into her heart.
John D. Rockefeller has donated a 35 foot marble fountain that arrived from Como. It will be installed in the New York Zoological Park Garden, where a base has been under construction.

Mrs Lillian M N Stevens national president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was re elected with 392 of 409 votes. Resolutions urged enfranchisement on equal terms with men condemned mob violence praised coal strike settlement protested child labor and welcomed Lady Henry Somerset. Lady Somerset and Rev Sanders said goodbye to the convention.
In Philadelphia on Oct 22 the Protestant Episcopal Church in America began its missionary conference with about two score bishops and hundreds of delegates. Sermon by Bishop Gaylor of Tennessee, communion led by Bishop Shuttle of Missouri. Meeting called to order by Bishop Tuttle of Missouri. Rev Dr Henry Anstice elected secretary, with Dean S Carrell Davis as assistant. Bishop Mackay welcomed visitors as the session focused on routine business. A public meeting followed in the evening.

Omaha Oct 22 American Christian Missionary society section elected officers for 1902 1903 with Philpott as president and other posts filled in Cincinnati Indianapolis Davison Angola and Atchison.
President Roosevelt orders the coal strike commission to meet Friday in Washington with initial sessions likely in Wilkes Barre. John Mitchell and W B Wilson signaled the end of the anthracite strike and the commission will hear testimony in Wilkes Barre and later in Philadelphia or New York.
Agents of the Anti-Saloon League arrested saloonkeepers in Alliance with multiple fines. Emi Schultz faced 75 and 50 dollar penalties for late hours and Sunday opening, others like William Longacher Charles Quinn and John Loftus also fined. Four more trials set for Saturday with Jerry and Ellen Tierney and Samuel and Joseph Klinger. Total fines 475 dollars. Columbus October 23. The state fish and game commissioner received many inquiries about rabbit hunting season. Col J L Rodgers president of the commission states that due to unclear laws it is not an offense to kill rabbits year round and sell them. All pending cases against alleged violators will be dismissed.
Chicago. Five bodies lie in the morgue after a blaze at the Corn Producer Company glucose works on West Taylor street. The fire left half a million dollars in damage and seventeen workers missing, with twelve injured from jumping from the building. Debris heat hampers searches.
County chairman Harry M. Daugherty of Columbus and Congressman candidate James Kennedy will speak at the Armory Friday evening October 31 as arranged by the county Republican chairman.
Dr. Charles Ellaworth Jackson dies at Fair Oak Villa after weeks of agony from tetanus and blood poisoning. A Philadelphia nurse and Army surgeon, his career included St Joseph's Hospital and service in the Philippines. Born near Fulton, he was 40, unmarried, son of David Jackson. funeral at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Episcopal Church.
