At noon today the American flag was raised over San Juan in a quiet ceremony. Eleventh Infantry and Fifth Artillery units landed. Admiral Schley, General Gordon attended the palace ceremony. Crowds cheered as Fort Morro, Fort San Cristobal fired salutes. Evacuation commission reports go to Washington next Tuesday.
A drizzly cold rain hampered Peace Jubilee Parade participants and spectators in Chicago yet the four hour procession proceeded. President McKinley rode in a six horse landau in the second division with Jubilees chair Truax. Generals Miles Shafter and Chaffee, Secretary Wilson and foreign ministers stood on the reviewing stand as about thirty thousand troops passed.
