Miners Press For Eight Hour Day At State Convention
Columbus Oct 9 At the morning session of the state miners convention a resolution was adopted demanding an eight hour work day statewide. Some miners had been working nine hours while others were idle. A resolution preserving the 66 cents a ton rate was tabled pending an open conference with operators. Penns speech in the afternoon argued miners would gain little by increasing hours. Operators present included Woodford Serat Morton Johnson Bros Courtwright and Brooks. Morton led the operators, citing Ohio mine losses and letters from railroads and others saying coal would be bought in Pittsburgh at current rates. A further conference was planned to seek a settlement.
