In Atlanta on October 9 a massive crowd welcomed the Liberty Bell as it arrived for the exposition. A parade escorted the bell from the depot to the Pennsylvania Building with governor’s horse guard, city officials, and Gilmore’s Band. America was sung by 2,000 schoolchildren during the program.

Antonio Maximo Mora receives about 465,095 after deductions, totaling just over 700,000. Dr. Jose S. Rodriguez, Mora’s attorney, is slated for 247,000, with another substantial but unspecified amount to Nathaniel Paze or his assignees.
Aussta Moscow reports a raft on the Oka river near Ozery capsized and 100 people drowned. Telegraph lines are down, delaying details. In Danville Kentucky General William J. Landrum, veteran of Mexican and Civil Wars and Grant ally, is gravely ill at 67 in Lancaster home.
General Mahone dies in Washington after a paralysis attack. Born December 1, 1826 in Virginia, he graduated from Virginia Military Institute and joined the Confederacy, forming the Sixth Virginia Infantry. He led Readjusters in politics, served in the U.S. Senate from 1879 to 1887, faced ostracism, bankruptcy, and attempted land sales before an assignment to protect creditors.
Over 400 delegates attend the interstate convention for Ohio river improvement. Officers named include President John L. Vance Gallipolis secretary E P Wilson Cincinnati and vice presidents from Pennsylvania Virginia Kentucky and Illinois.
