Washington reports President Roosevelt held conferences with Cabinet members and Governor Crane to explore federal action on the coal strike. Advisers concluded federal power was insufficient, but a new session with Root and business leaders aimed to gauge possible settlement methods without federal interference. Governor Crane returned to Massachusetts as talks continued.
Mayor Samuel M. Jones issues a proclamation warning that winter coal shortages will affect thousands. He notes calls for U S courts to appoint receivers for anthracite firms and coal carriers and invites Toledo citizens to Memorial Hall on Oct 2 1902 to pass resolutions supporting Boston activists and discuss related business.
Detroit October 1 President D M Parry of the National Association of Manufacturers received from President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers a telegram proposing a conference between committees to end the coal strike. The message dated Wilkesbarre Sept 30 asks for a meeting in the east and to appoint a representative committee. Parry replied urging a full authority committee including Mitchell and suggested Buffalo as the meeting place with date flexibility.
Henry Phipps, associate of Carnegie Steel, arrived in New York aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II. He donated 100000 to the relief fund for destitute Boers and noted Arthur White’s influence on Chamberlain’s decision. He said he would have given the money to England if it had been the suffering country.
President Mitchell remained silent on talks with mine owners as rumors swirl of a man linked to J. P. Morgan near the negotiators. Strikers believe a settlement is near while nonunion workers quit at Hyde Park and Cayuga mine, and demonstrations by schoolchildren spread the protest. London reports the British Westinghouse Electric company secured a contract to erect and fully equip the Clyde Valley Power plant at Glasgow, Scotland, costing about 2.5 million dollars. It will be the largest such plant in the United Kingdom, prompting nationwide jubilation as British industry wins a major deal from leading American firms.

Manila reports 5124 new cholera cases and 2740 deaths in Panay island wrong. Mingo town in Iloilo suffered 1172 cases while Cahatuan and Cumanecas reported 39 and 295 cases respectively. People flee to mountains as authorities rush doctors and medicine to quell outbreak. Total Monday across provinces stood at 5390 cases and 39 deaths.
The chronicler recounts Miguel de Cervantes as a youth, a slave in Algiers who plotted to rescue himself and thirteen others. When a traitor exposed the plan, Cervantes offered to sacrifice himself and save his companions. The dey spared him, ransomed him, and sent him home.

Miss Alice Hay second daughter of Secretary of State John Hay and James W Wadsworth of Geneseo N Y were quietly married yesterday at The Fells Lake Sunapee the bride's father's summer home. The ceremony was at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev C L Hayden of Cleveland in the presence of relatives and close friends.

Cleveland is expected to send the largest delegation.
Melvin R. Smith faced a preliminary murder hearing for the shooting of James Shetler in Canton. The case will go to a grand jury, with Smith remaining jailed until January unless a special grand jury is convened. Witnesses described the shooting on a Canton-Massillon line car and an autopsy confirmed a bullet caused Shetler's death.
