The Pan American congress reassembled in Washington with Secretary Blaine presiding. Delegates, many present, debated credentials and rules, but progress was limited by unfamiliarity with the rule report and a decision to postpone until Friday. The group selected names by lot for future presiding officers, while secretaries remain Guzman of Nicaragua and Zegarra, acting temporarily. The meeting adjourned at 3:45 PM.
Battimors Nov 21 The Navassa trial opened with government witness William James detailing a planned killing of bosses, a protest by workers, and a brutal system of forced labor. He described overwork, stocks, and cruel conditions including mountings of hunger, extortionate store prices, and harsh discipline. the day ended with adjournment.
St John of St Louis announces retirement from professional sculling after Teemer controversy. He says he is through with rowing forever and will not attend the professional rowing association’s inaugural meeting in Boston on the sixth of next month, though he acknowledges capable men in Boston ready to push the scheme.
Mrs Nathaniel Strang of Jacksonville Michigan attempted to kill herself and her daughter during her husband’s absence. She used paris green in a failed murder suicide pact, both women surviving the initial act but dying within hours after exposure. A doctor saved them, while the afflicted mother insisted the daughter was forced by coercion, leaving mournful reactions among onlookers and doctors.
Mearien Bure, a night watchman, was slain in a saloon at Fort Point after being warned off by Carl Schwenk, proprietor. Schwenk fired, killing the officer instantly as a bystander suffered serious injuries from stray shots. Furnian was arrested.

Diphtheria is raging in Laxcaster with over 00 cases reported. The board of health has ordered the closure of all public and Sunday schools and quarantined every house where the disease is present. About twenty children and several adults have died.
New York on November 20 reports Jack Carney and Tom Murphy, 120-pound pugilists, brawled for a stake in a dining room at a Paterson area hotel. Carney knocked Murphy out of time in the fourth round.
