Three burglars raided the Cleveland residence of John Mirka a 72 year old miser at 448 East Prospect street. Mirka refused to reveal hidden money and was beaten bound gagged and burned with a lamp flame on his feet hands and body until unconscious. Police believe the burglars gained nothing.
Treasury reports show from Feb 1 1896 to Nov 1 1896 US mints coined 16 262 022 standard silver dollars from bullion bought under the 1890 act. Seignorage totaled 9 031 130. bullion on hand valued 1 203 fine ounces costing 112 865 dollars. The treasury reserve totals 124 151 088 with a net gold gain of 383 000. A resolution opposed a new Woman Bible and greetings were sent to Jewish women with praise for Georgia’s large delegation.
William J. Bryan will deliver his first address in Atlanta in December with a route extending to Jacksonville Savannah Charleston Augusta Birmingham New Orleans then Texas California and Oregon before returning to the East in late February 1897. The organizers include W E McBee and Alexander Comstock with undisclosed terms, reportedly higher than any possible presidential salary, and the tour is non partisan focusing on government and social topics.

Hanna declined to confirm a cabinet announcement, and the group discussed a possible winter visit to Thomasville with Major McKinley. General Osborne will stay until tomorrow then return to New York. Major and Mrs McKinley enjoyed a carriage drive aiding Mrs McKinley’s health.
King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway erected a granite monument at the Bergen road site where Mr. and Mrs. Daniel W. Youmans of New York City perished on July 4. A granite shaft bears an inscription and a note that Oscar II erected this memorial, with the state department acknowledging the gesture and sending thanks to the foreign minister.
