An advertisement urges women readers to obtain samples of all silk Black Brocades priced at $1.00. The copy claims the silks are unusually valuable, heavy, and handsome, 22 inches wide, and promises strong interest regardless of buyers’ initial intent, inviting requests via mail.
A local textile listing touts Black Brocades priced from 50 to 75 cents up to three dollars a yard, highlighting superior value at one dollar. It promotes Black Silke at 503 a yard and a range of fabrics Peau de Soie Faille Francaise Radzimirs Armure Rhadame Latin Duchesse, plus Moire Velours and Moire Poplins in wide widths.
An advertisement touts plain fine solid black imported wide vale diagonals and other black goods in widths around 58cc, priced at 50 cents to 75 cents. It promises hundreds of pieces of fine novelty weaves including stripes cords and figures, claiming exceptional quality and value, and invites readers to request samples and the catalog.
A Junky advertisement from the Iron City Dish Washer Co offers a “Dish Washer” spoon and complete instructions for ten 2 cent stamps. Miss Fritz of St Louis promises orders and earnings claims, with testimonials from Jeannette S and others. The pitch targets homemakers, claiming rapid profits and household utility, urging readers to send for a sample and join a home selling network.
The United States and Great Britain select Oscar II of Sweden and Norway as the fifth arbiter to settle the Venezuelan boundary. Two arbiters from each nation will name the remaining four. 50 years possession will establish title, and the court will sit in Stockholm. The treaty excludes a general arbitration and focuses on Venezuela only.

Rochester N Y Nov 11 The general assembly of the Knights of Labor is in session with about 100 delegates present Mrs Ford the only woman delegate presiding and delivering a speech The meeting in Rochester highlights labor issues and policy discussions affecting workers nationwide.
General Mayor Workman Sovereign presided as delegates from the United States and Canada gathered. Charles Wright welcomed attendees and introduced Mayor Warns who spoke, with M. J. Bishop of Boston replying for the Worthy Foreman and noting order effects. Mrs. Ford of Rochester spoke as the lone woman delegate before the secret meeting began.
In New York a luncheon at the Equitable Building honored Mark A. Hanna with Isiac M. Seligman hosting. Among 30+ guests were Abram Hewitt, Carl Schurz, Seth Low, Theodore Roosevelt, and many leading bankers. Hanna said the administration would start unpledged and free to select a cabinet. Other brief items note a murder-suicide in White Plains, a fatal fire in Hamlin, West Virginia, a bank defaulter in Roussac county, a train wreck near Plains, and South Dakota Republicans at Sioux City asserting a broad GOP majority.
J S Coxey of Commonweal fame announces a platform calling for demonetization of gold and silver state ownership of railroads highways waterways telegraph and telephone lines municipal control of streetcar waterworks gas plants and electric light voter enfranchisement direct presidential election and public employment. He invites supporters of initiative and referendum to the Lindell hotel in St Louis for a convention on January 12 1897.
A November Ohio meeting of bituminous coal producers and carriers at the Trunk Line Association rooms included presidents and managers from Hocking Valley, Pennsylvania Railroad, Wheeling and Lake Erie, Baltimore and Ohio, Columbus, Sandusky and Hocking, Cleveland, Lorain and Wheeling, and Toledo and Ub. A bakery fire in West Manesfield raged beyond control destroying the mayor’s office, city prison, Grubbs & Gordon block, and John Marsh’s barn. A jail escape attempt involved a monkey wrench. A Sharpe Peck barn fire from locomotive sparks killed two horses and several cows with no insurance. Also reported: Bond’s forged order case, a suicide attempt by Dinel Miller, two youths sentenced for horse stealing, a West Lima death, and Ohio Valley Improvement talks. Two killed in Perry county boiler explosion at Roderick Baker’s mill in Lexington, Kentucky.
Washington report quotes Senator Carter of Montana saying no major tariff measure will pass this session and Democrats likely won’t obstruct next Congress. He warns silver Republicans that hard times cure by silver link to tariff fights, urging acceptance of Republican tariff proposals in the upcoming campaign.
Canadian finance minister W S Fielding stated in New York that Ottawa will press for a reciprocity treaty with the United States when President elect McKinley takes office. Canadian business leaders, led by Montreal interests, favor renewing the Elgin reciprocity treaty of 1854 and expect Ottawa’s Washington visit next spring to push reciprocal legislation.
Reports from Isotaxavois and other cities Nov 11 14 include a Farmers National congress resolution urging equal use of gold and silver coinage with free unlimited minting. The measure calls for a conference to set a mutual ratio for both metals. Also noted are release of Mrs Castle from Wormwood Scrubs on medical grounds and other briefs. The National Civil Service Reform League plans reforms and torpedo boat No 4 launches, plus treasury gold reserve figures and Atlanta Senate ballot outcomes. Hobart honored at Rutgers Charter Day.
