A hurricane struck Cairo Illinois on May 27 causing major damage to the opera house and Union depot while a ferryboat named Katharine capsized at the Ohio River mouth. Fifteen people drowned including several Cairo residents and a Bird’s Point clerk. Captain and clerk were washed from the wheel but survived with guards aiding.
May 27 report from North McGregor says 27 residents perished and six convoymen from Kirkhut and Ryans circus died as a boxcar incident occurred during a cloudburst. Conductor W. J. Detroit May 27 reports a devastating Michigan cyclone with 38 deaths confirmed and many injured. The list names Addison Oakwood Groveland West Brandon Ortonville and nearby areas including multiple families and individuals. Additional injuries and fatalities are feared as districts report in.
