The British steamer German Emperor from London to Bilbao collided with the Beresford anchored at Goodwin sands. The German Emperor sank instantly, three rescued from the German Emperor, while the Beresford’s bows were stove in and she proceeded to Gravesend for temporary repairs. Nine German Emperor crew landed at Dover. later reports reduced fatality fears. Beresford carries twenty five of her crew and twelve from the German Emperor.

W T Hodge of Ravetadt North Carolina filed in Superior Court a suit against forty railroads seeking the $500 penalty for failing to file annual reports to the governor as required by a 20 year old statute. If he wins the aggregate could reach twenty thousand dollars.
In Pittspore May 22 a chilly interior and cold wind did not deter about 9000 people from attending the inauguration of the new music hall and the May festival. The orchestra seating was sparse, but boxes were largely filled by proxies and the balconies well occupied. The opening night was a success with the performers receiving an ovation.
In Paris Texas on May 22 T Ownby a lawyer and Richard Moore fought a short range duel in Ownbys office. Moore was shot and killed while being escorted to a preliminary examination. Moore's brother vows to kill Ownby. May festival opens in Pittsburgh with Governor Beaver and other state leaders expected.
The New York Presbyterian general assembly debates the fourth Freedmen resolution and approves a Home Missions budget of 870,000 for the year. Reports on emigration, colleges, and board cooperation are adopted while Dr. Ketchum raises a probe into Freedmen mismanagement. The Woodrow case discussion continues with mixed views.
A man named Kouitz died after his arm was caught in the machinery at the St. Clair incline power house on Twenty second Street Southside. He was oiling the equipment when drawn between the wheels. he left a widow and one child. Also noted is the filing of papers in Columbus for the Springfield Natural Gas Company with founders Gen W S Bushnell A B Kelly P J Cate T W Ludlow and John Koos and initial capital of 10000 to rise to 60000. Gas is to be piped from Mercer county wells.
Continuation of the Chicago Insane Asylum investigation yields new testimony. Witnesses describe a wife and daughter visiting in 1885 and 1898, with claims of filthy wards vermin sores and a supposedly newborn infant shown to a husband. Beatings of male patients are also alleged as the inquiry continues today.
Seven colored men near Brusville bound a respected colored man, then raped his wife and attacked his 10 year old daughter. A posse chased them, they were captured near the scene, jailed under guard as threats of jailbreak and lynching rose. The wife lies in a real condition, the child dying. militia may be summoned.
