Cabinet says Chinese Exclusion law unenforceable due to funds

At a full cabinet meeting in Washington on May 17 the Chinese exclusion law was deemed unenforceable because only 100000 had been appropriated and perhaps 35000 remained unspent. Deporting all noncompliant Chinese would cost about 6 million, leaving the government unable to enforce the act without new congressional action.

Worshiped a Scrub Woman Forces Fraud Case

Mary Houston reports May Harvey and her husband exploited Maggie Hooper and Mamie Maxwell in a fraud scheme. Harvey allegedly posed as a divine healer, had followers pray, served wine as remembrance, and coerced Hooper and Maxwell into worship. Neighbors heard late night prayers and a back window light. Police have arrested the suspects amid dramatic neighborhood claims.

Rabid dog bite shocks Judge Pugh scene in court

General Assembly gavel gift from historic woods noted in Washington

Washington May 7 George H Sanford presided as first commissioner to the Presbyterian general assembly, with the gavel fashioned from cherry wood from Mt Vernon and a fragment of the frigate Constitution inside and a piece from the Washington monument capstone on top. The piece belonged to W B Gurley, Lincoln’s pastor. The assembly also features flowers from the White House conservatories and Mrs Cleveland.

Murderer Almy Hung The brutal murder of Christie Warden avenged

The execution of George H. Abbott alias Frank C. Almy at Hanover prison on July 17, 1891, ended a notorious case. Spectators from Hanover witnessed the hanging, including the murdered girl’s brother and the student who shot Almy. The process was bungled as his feet touched the door and he was strangled.
