In Wastixetox May 13 a grand ceremony unveiled the Major General Winfield Scott Hancock statue before President Cleveland Vice President Stevenson and officials. The event featured a large parade by artillery marines cavalry and militia with General Brooke as grand marshal. Senator John M Palmer delivered the principal oration and West Point cadet Gywnn Hanrock drew the ropes to reveal the statue.
The senate ends four days of contention over a deep water harbor on California's southern coast with a compromise. Santa Monica and San Pedro clash, a three civil engineers and naval survey commission to settle the site. An amendment capping contract expenditures at 10 million sparked fierce debate and a motion to table failed. The measure was not disposed of by 3 pm as the session adjourned.
In Washington on May 13 the senate finance committee appointed a five member sub committee to probe bond sales under the Peifer resolution. Washington May 18 The senate finance committee reported favorably the house filled cheese bill with amendments. The changes cut annual revenue taxes on manufacturers from 400 to 240 dollars and on wholesale dealers from 250 to 200 dollars. The report passed by a bare majority of one on a 5 to 4 vote.
The centennial of Congregationalism west of the Alleghenies opens in Marietta Ohio at the old First Congregational Church built in 1807. Prominent participants include Prof Frank H Foster Rev Alonzo H Quint Charles F Thwing Rev Delaven L Leonard Rev Cornelius H E Dickinson and Rev James Brands with future speakers from Ohio Indiana Illinois Wisconsin and Michigan. The event recalls early settlement days and the Northwest Territory's religious history.
A May 13 gas explosion at the state school for the feeble minded youth in Comraes followed a storm and a displaced gas tank. Superintendent Dr G A Li Doren and several staff and workers suffered serious burns, with Hunt possibly critically burned and others badly burned but not critically injured.

A tornado or violent storm swept through a Nebraska region near Bien Coin and Lynne, driving residents into cellars and caves. Homes and crops were razed along a two mile wide path, with multiple deaths and injuries reported. Henry G. Davis Jr., son of a former senator, drowned during a mid ocean cruise, adding to the tragedy.
Ex police captain Edward B Carpenter pleaded guilty to bribery in New York and was sentenced to three months in the penitentiary and a 1500 fine for accepting a $1000 bribe from the Liquor Dealers association.
A cyclone struck Notoxa Texas on May 13 demolishing the houses of K. Davis and E. J. Pruett. Mr. and Mrs. Pruett were severely injured and a Davis child was badly hurt.
