Republic Iron and Steel ties to Corns firm amid talks of merger

J C Adams reports from Massillon that Republic Iron and Steel, incorporated at Trenton with 55 million capital, may absorb Corns Iron and Steel. negotiations continue. Adams plans to leave Massillon for Buffalo and will not join the Republic. Corns remains in New York. no authoritative statement yet.

John Zinsmier Case Seeks Bethlehem Township Land Title

A common pleas court case titled John Zinsmier against the unknown heirs of David Barnhisel seeks legal title to 127 acres of land in Bethlehem township. Grand Jury Reports Indictments and Jail Critique

Canton May 6 The grand jury for Stark County May term 1899 reports five days of sessions, examined eighty three witnesses in twenty two cases, returned fifteen indictments and ignored seven. It recommends stricter jail cleanliness and notes lighting and repair issues. Indictments include Paige Murray Murray Lothamer Norton Kester and Jordan. Sheriff Zaiser criticizes jail condition and plans remodeling with more windows and steel bars. The week’s civil docket lists thirty six equity cases across two courtrooms May 8 to May 12 with multiple plaintiffs and defendants.

Mrs Martha Ellen Bullock of 407 West Main street died suddenly of heart paralysis at 9:10 pm after retiring. She left four children and was 40, wife of George Bullock, daughter of Mrs William Wilson of Clinton. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm. Also noted are the deaths of Mrs William Gallon Callon and Louis S Buttermore, with funeral details and church announcements, plus Scio College commencement updates and a resolution of respect from Tuscarawas Tribe No. 150 for Brother Shatlert.

Reward Offered for Dynamiters Conviction by Ohio Warden

State fish and game warden Charles Rettinger of Athens said in Massillon that Deputy Warden Dangeleisen may pay 25 dollars for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of those who dynamited the river. Both river banks show dead fish, mostly suckers, with bass and other game fish selectively removed.

Last Rites for Mrs Waltz and Local Funeral Notices

Funeral services for Mrs Bertha Hallock were held at her parents home in Richville avenue, with Rev. J. Wilson officiating. Michael Steelsmith and Valentine Shearer interments followed in Massillon cemetery, with relatives from nearby cities attending. Mrs Eliza Smith and Mrs John Waltz had services at their residences or St Marys church, with pallbearers named and society members attending.

Republican county central committee sets May primary and convention dates

Castox May 6 The Republican county central committee met with Chairman Allen Carnes presiding. It was decided the primary would be held May 20 with polls 1 to 7 30 p m except Canton 12 to 6 oa m The nominating books open May 8 and stay open until noon the following Saturday. Candidates for central committeemen and county convention delegates must file with the precinct committeeman. Stark county gets twenty delegates to the state convention Canton city township seven Massillon Perry township three Alliance and Lexington township three. The remaining seven chosen by small towns and other townships. County convention set for Saturday May 27 to select state convention delegates.

Moles Writes Home From Altoona Hospital

Winfield Moles, in an Altoona hospital with wounds from a recent highwayman attack, writes to his brother N. E. Moles at 220 Front Street. He reports a broken jaw on both sides, a broken upper right jaw, a split right ear, and a bad condition overall, stating he is no better than on arrival.

Browne's Travels Through the Western Frontiers 1898

A correspondent recounts a westward journey begun July 6, 1898 from Ruskin Tennessee to Pine Bluff Murray Paducah and St Louis. He describes counties, towns, and crowds met along the way, notes on farms and laboring people, encounters with Indians and cattlemen, and travels through Oklahoma and Indian Territory toward Colorado. The letter blends travelogue, political observations, and personal hardship during storms and blizzards.
