Newport May 6 The sensational Jackson murder trial features detective Seward asking for mercy after confessing to procuring a defense witness and fabricating testimony. defense witnesses from Caldwell guards conflict on timing of a court martial, three are bonded and jailed. Additional testimony implicates Sheriff Beasley and others. the case broadens with a dying boy incident, Bribery case in Columbus, and other national notices.
A duke and duchess traveling incognito were relieved of money by two masked brigands near Fracati, twelve miles from Rome. The duke surrendered his purse containing 55 lire. the robbers were later captured. Also reports of labor violence in Poland, a notable California elopement, Li Hung Chang gifts, a walk to New York for charity, a Philadelphia financial disappearance, a Louisville title company default, and a Chicago industrialist killed.
Milwauk street car service reports 34 cars in operation amid lingering petty riots. In Sacramento May 6 delegates in five districts instruct Jory McKinley in a split GOP convention. Baseball results sweep across Pittsburg Cleveland Cincinnati and more with varied lineups and attendances.
After a five story blast on Walnut street, eight people are dead and seven remain missing. Rescue work halted as walls bulged and debris threatened further collapse. The move stems from a proposal to repeal the alcohol tax rebate used in arts and medicines.
