Twenty two ballots before verdict in Calhoun case

The jury in Calhoun case adjourned after twenty two ballots with acquittal prevailing on the final round. Foreman Zang of Alliance announced the verdict as jurors remained sequestered through the night, with Bailiff Holman coordinating the break of dawn proceedings.

Acquittal Brings Roaring Courtroom Cheer and Celebration

After Judge Taylor barred demonstrations, the verdict of not guilty triggered loud cheers in the courtroom. Mrs. George thanked jurors, then left with relatives for a celebratory dinner. Her sons Nelson and Howard attended. The trial lasted twenty two days ending on the twenty second ballot.

A false report spread that Mrs George was acquitted, originating when C W Breider telephoned City Treasurer Kirchhofer from Canton at 4:30 pm claiming the fact. Breder soon admitted it was a joke, but the rumor had already circulated widely.

Koons Sentenced to Workhouse by Mayor Wise

George Koons pleaded guilty to intoxication and disorderly conduct before Mayor Wise. He was sentenced to thirty days in the workhouse and taken to Canton after arrest. The mayor previously warned he would be harsher next time.
