Death Calls Beloved Priest Kaempker in Massillon
The Rev. Father Henry Vanderwall Kaempker, 56, rector of St. Marys Catholic church Massillon, died at 5:45 p.m. after a ten day typhoid illness. Born in Westphalia and educated in Munster and Bonn, he came to America in 1876 and served Galion prior to Massillon since 1890. He led parish, school, and fundraising efforts, expanded church heating and art, met civic ties, and journeyed to Rome and to Pope Leo XIII. His death triggers bereavement across Massillon, the Cleveland diocese, and among parishioners and friends.
