A joint miners and operators sub committee broke on 25 proposals including slack car price, breakthroughs pay, inside day labor, tunnel work, room and pillar rates, paydays, eight hour day, car limits, and dinner hours. Both sides remained far apart with an ultimatum looming after no afternoon agreement.
Crystal Spring March 23 reports 150 miners at the North Massillon mine owned by Ridgway Burton Co. refuse to work until hoisting engineers join the United Mine Workers of America and the "back action" screen is eliminated.
The Rt. Rev. William A. Leonard bishop of the Northern Ohio diocese presided at St Timothy's Thursday conferring the class including Mrs Helen Hess Helen E Smith Ruth E McAlymonds Annie Jarvis Marion Gates Louise Patterson Margaret C Grant Isabel Grant Esther A Dobson Mayville E Spuhler. He preached urging personal progress according to church teaching and noted St Pauls exhortation to live godly lives. Bishop Leonard returned to Cleveland Friday morning hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Dimon at 115 North Street. he is a cousin of Dr. Dimon.

Putman and Saalleup completed the semi annual exam of the county treasury as appointed by Probate Judge Aungst. They reported 840,878.47 belonging to the county and 126,433.52 belonging to Canton city, totaling 166,811.99 in cash on hand, with 31,722.49 in over drafts. The accountants found the books and affairs of the office in first class condition and in accurate alignment with the auditor's records.
About fifty delegates attended the Women's Missionary Society conference of the East Ohio U B Church in Canton on a two day session. Robert A Pinn Republican candidate for justice of the peace in Perry township is praised as fully qualified. A Civil War veteran with five wounds including a shoulder injury, he earned medals for meritorious conduct at Richmond in 1864. After the war he studied law, passed in 1879, built a strong practice, and held G A R leadership roles. His German language skills aid his legal work.

Cass City, Michigan reports that Mrs Nathan Town sent last night poisoned herself and her two children a 10 year old boy and an 8 year old girl with laudanum. The mother died today and authorities note family difficulties may have prompted the tragedy. An unrelated ad for De Witt's Little Early Risers promotes liver cleansing pills.
General Funston with ten soldiers and a company of native scouts advances into Isabella province in a bold effort to capture Aguinaldo, as reported by the Associated Press.
Cleveland March 23. Nicholas Heeney, aged 19, who killed Frank Johnson, an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad, last month, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the penitentiary. Bahney's wallpaper store is filled with new season wallpapers.
A. W. Watson, a retired capitalist, was beaten in his home and robbed of 107 dollars. An unknown African American assailant struck him with an iron bar. Watson seized Labarge, his servant, who aided the crime but was captured by the victim until police arrived. Watson believes the thieves knew of his 1600 dollar total.
Secretary Hay paid 100000 treasury warrant for Cagayan islands per treaty and protocols. Wood notes Havana February death rate 19.32 per 1000, far below many eastern and southern U S cities. The report compares Havana health to Spanish rule era 1898 and cites lower mortality.

On March 20 Colonel Scovell clashed with Commandants Fouche and Malan near Blaankrants, leaving three British dead and four wounded and four Boers killed.
