Death of Lieutenant Wm Carmi Babcock Shocks Massillon

Lieutenant Wm Carmi Babcock United States Navy died in New York after a cold contracted in Washington. He was the youngest Annapolis 1871 graduate and served with distinction. His mother Mrs Amanda Rhodes of San Francisco, sister of Judge Anson Pease, will arrive with his brother to arrange military funeral details at the Navy Yard.

Jacoby Estate Heirship Case Attracts Attention In Canton

Cora Stevenson filed an answer and inter-pleader in the McCaughey versus Stevenson case over the Jacoby estate of Massillon. She seeks her husband's one eighth share and, if blocked, her dower as widow of Braynard Richards. The petition is noted as highly peculiar and has drawn local attention. Health of the City 1895 Communicable Diseases Report

The annual health board report for 1895 notes influenza causing the most deaths, with diphtheria scarlet fever and measles milder in many cases. Typhoid fell 34 percent from 1594, aided by better water use. Births and deaths are tabulated by ward. sewer and garbage disposal urged. public placarding practices critiqued. doctors urged trustworthiness. one officer reports delays with street railway access.

Stark county bonds sold and Massillon suits filed

Bids for Stark county refunding bonds at 5 percent were opened. Season Good & Co. of Cincinnati offered the top premium of 1850, accepted. Diets Dennison & Prior of Cleveland offered 1540. Also noted are suits: John McIntosh sues Fanny L Clay, Taylor Clay and others for two 5000 promissory notes secured by a mortgage. Other cases involve Daniel Hemperly and property disputes.
