City safety chief Joel Smith to retire after four years

Masillon safety service director Joel Smith, 62, has resigned and will retire May 3. Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry appointed Barb Sylvester to replace him, creating an opening in the budget and income tax office to be filled by Lori Kotagides-Boron. Samantha Walters is also linked to the transition.

Wealthy parents and coaches charged in college admissions scam

Federal charges target Felicity Huffman Lori Loughlin and about 50 people in a college admissions bribery scheme. Prosecutors say parents paid roughly 25 million dollars to secure entry for their children with help from coaches and insiders. Dozens were arrested as investigations unfolded.

Stark County districts shift kindergarten cutoff to August 1

Nine of Stark County's 17 public districts will require children to be 5 by August 1 to enter kindergarten next year, changing the long standing Sept 30 cutoff. The move means August born children may start kindergarten while September born peers may need another year of preschool.
