Public Schools Interest Grips Massillon Readers
The Massillon public school formed October 29, 1848 as the first Union school in the region, drawing pupils from nearby towns. In its first year 832 visits were logged, with 447 average daily attendance and 70 high school enrollees in five months. A catalog of officers, teachers, and scholars was published soon after opening, and a reprint of the first page is shared through Mrs. Eliza Bachtel's courtesy.

Tyler Sentenced to Five Years for Forgery in Canton
Dominick Tyler, age over seventy, pleaded guilty to two forgery indictments and received a three year term on the first count and a two year term on the second, to run consecutively for five years. He was taken to Columbus by Sheriff Zaiser. The forged notes, $750 each, were drawn on the Union National Bank of Massillon, in the name of George Deuber of Canton. Prosett said the other indictments may be annulled due to his age.

Columpus March 5 Mr Sullivan's libel bill passed the Senate yesterday afternoon. It favors editors by letting a defendant prove truth as a defense. If published in good faith the damage is reduced. Defendants failing to publish a timely correction face damages unless correction is made.

Bills Passed by Legislature Extend Snipe Season and Quail Sale Ban
Columbus reports three bills approved Wednesday by both chambers. One extends the snipe killing season from Sept 1 to May 15 and bans selling or shipping quail within or out of the state, with game wardens empowered to open packages for transport. Another relieves Canton township trustees of Stark county from refunding overdrawn salaries. A third bill assigns two deputy Stark county election supervisors who must not reside in the county seat.
