Santiago yesterday reports Spanish fleet shells American troops with deadly effect. All reserves have been ordered to the front as casualties mount and defense tightens amid ongoing naval engagement near the port.
Dispatches detail heavy fighting at Santiago and El Caney with multiple brigades engaged. Casualties exceed four hundred with estimates up to a thousand killed or wounded as U S forces push toward the city and fortifications, while a reconnaissance balloon provides crucial observation.

Superintendent Pontius turns over 1300 to the county treasury for June prison board and sales. A large decrease: 203 school age youths vanish while enumerators count 3798, down from 4001. John Ellis aided by A B Oberiin M W Oberiin and Naavy Wiseman.
A call from National President Julia A Croft for Daughters of Veterans to aid soldiers at the front is endorsed at a local meeting. The group proposes an emergency fund held by tent treasurers to assist families of servicemen and urges members to prepare for any call from the President. In other town news, local sports reports, civic notices, and community updates follow as the column moves through Canal Fulton and nearby areas.
Admiral Sampson reports the destruction of Cervera's fleet at Santiago. The Cristobal Colon failed to escape, the Infanta Maria Teresa Oquendo and Vizcaya were ashore and destroyed, Furor and Pluton sunk near the port. American losses were one dead and two wounded, with about thirteen hundred prisoners including Admiral Cervera. The slain man was George H. Ellis.
