In Washington on January 28 the House Judiciary Committee lacked support to impeach Judge Augustus J. Ricks of Cleveland. Nine to seven opposed impeachment, and a denunciation of the fee system was adopted instead. Four Democrats backed Ricks, while party lines dominated. The committee also reported no clear grounds for removal and noted the proceedings were largely political.
Cleveland officials report The Ladies Monthly Gem has received大量 letters from across the United States and Canada, with money, amid indictments for fraudulent mail use. They estimate about $50,000 swept in last month as the scheme offered an $8.25 package of a year’s magazine and a gold watch, though watches sent were brass and worth under $1. The Gem’s operation is under scrutiny. postal confiscations have halted remittances.
