In Harrissere on January 18 the first day of the United States senate fight ends with Quay ahead but not elected. Quay holds 112 votes in both houses, while Jenks leads the Democratic slate. Anti Quay Republicans and Democrats pledge and vote shape a possible daily ballot until a choice is made. The house tally lists Quay 83, Jenks 70, Dalzell 14, and other totals. The senate tallies show Quay 27, Jenks 2, with several minor votes.
George A. Jenks, while traveling from Bradford to Harrisburg, voiced support for a fusion front in the senate contest. He said Democrats and anti-Quay Republicans must unite to beat Quay and that he will back any candidate with enough strength to defeat the Quay vote.
The U S army transport Grant with 1800 troops under Major General Lawton sailed from Brooklyn last night bound for Manila. General Hallot will command aboard while Lawton travels as passenger. A few men obtained leave and did not return, being taken in custody. General Linnton and staff joined the voyage along with four Red Cross nurses. House and Senate members and Adjutant General Corvin inspected the ship.
The trial of private Joseph Buckley for the killing of fellow private John Hughes in Company E Second Louisiana volunteers at Marianoo ends with a death verdict expected after review. Prosecution cites Buckley’s normal mental state. 400 policemen in Havana reconstituted force include 100 Spaniards. Chief Menocal to appoint his three brothers as inspectors.
President McKinley sent a message to Congress praising the Bear’s crew for rescuing the imperiled whaling fleet in Arctic waters last year. He called it a glorious page in American seafaring history and urged congressional thanks and gold medals for the officers and men, plus 2500 dollars for rewards to W. T. Lopp and local herders who aided the relief expedition.
The Fourth Ohio was paid at noon and mustered out. Acting Paymaster General Carey ordered no deduction from soldiers' pay for state payments prior to volunteer service acceptance. Comptroller Tracewell later modified the ruling, holding no deductions should be made for state militia payments, clarifying compensation from the United States act of 188.
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled the law shifting sheriffs term start from January to September unconstitutional stating legislature lacked power to create a gap between a sheriff and his successor. The decision nullifies interim appointees and calms county disputes over overlapping terms. In Cleveland, Wallace Bennett and his wife were fined $200 each and jailed six months for harassing Willam Powell, a New York traveler, with Judge Fiedler remarking the punishment aimed to protect society rather than Powell alone.
The second annual convention of coal operators and miners began at Carnegie hall Allegheny with M D Ratchford, retiring UMWA president, praising peace under the Chicago agreement. He urged renewal of the contract to keep labor peace. Alexander Dempster of Pittsburgh was unanimously named permanent chairman amid congratulations. Dalzeil supported the nomination and Dempster spoke of hope for continued harmony.
Colonel William J. Bryan spoke twice in Denver with tickets required for the House chamber audience and a second address at Coliseum hall drawing thousands including leaders Governor Grant and Adams among others. Afterward Bryan and Mrs. Bryan dined with Governor Thomas and guests. In Picssure Jan. 18 Michael Ruminski, condemned for wife murder, hanged himself in Allegheny county jail, taking life by strangulation with beds cards.
John Russell Young, librarian of the congressional library, died at his residence in Washington after weeks of illness from Bright's disease and overwork. He was 62. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at St John Episcopal Church with private interment in Washington.
News from Washington reports quiet conditions in Manila with Diiono affairs progressing well. The cable notes fraternization among insurgents on shore and no trouble. President McKinley announced the commission personnel to inspect the Philippines: Schurmann, Dewey, Otto, Denby, and War Secretary. Democratic opponents seek an amendment to define Philippines status as Cabu, promising a persistent fight if not granted.
Introduced by Lentz and Wasnisutoy in January, the resolution calls for discharging volunteers who served the war with Spain and allows raising 13,000 troops among natives of newly acquired island territories. Also includes medical claims about catarrh and advertisements for Hood’s Sarsaparilla and Hood’s Pills mailed from Lowell, Massachusetts.
President Merritt announced a court martial for Commissary General Charles P. Eagan over abusive language about Major General Nelson A. Miles. Eagan likely will be tried soon, with General Merritt as probable presiding officer and Miles alerted to the political sensitivities surrounding the case.
At the annual trustees meeting in the city tonight the plan to relocate the Chautauqua assembly headquarters to Cleveland was presented. The committee led by Bishop J. Vincent and William Thoms with Ps. Rd. Grenberry and Hyde of Jamestown prepared the project report for submission to the board.
Thomas Taggart, mayor of Indianapolis, received a telegram from Fort Morgan about a launch sighting stranded on Depoton Island at the entrance to Motule Bay. He ordered a boat sent to investigate. Fort Morgan is 35 miles away. Taggart has a daughter aboard the missing pleasure launch Paul Jones.
