San Francisco observers report a successful sun eclipse viewing at Winnemucca on January 3. Professor Howe and five assistants made numerous drawings and photographs though negatives were not developed, lasting one minute forty four seconds with mountains on the moon clearly visible.
The report details eclipse observations by Professor Davidson and Harvard party at Willows and Anaheim with over fifty photographs, noting clear sun during totality and a two forked corona. Various observers from Carleton College and Lick Observatory contributed, recording contact timings, instruments used, Venus and Mercury visibility, and atmospheric conditions.

In St Louis on January 2 a planned public sparring event for Mitchell and Kilrain was halted by police after a mob scare and officials ordered the exhibition stopped. Baltimore January 2 The Manufacturers Record annual review details the souths growing capital from new mining and manufacturing interests organized since 1858 totaling 168.8 million across states Alabama Kentucky Texas Georgia Virginia Tennessee Maryland West Virginia Arkansas North Carolina Louisiana South Carolina Florida Mississippi and others It notes 3618 new enterprises in 1885 with rail expansion, iron and coal output rises, cotton mills increase to over 300 mills, seed mills number about 160 and livestock and agricultural values surge with grain production and overall economic gains in the region.
A large blaze at Oscar Beach last night consumed eight structures on Freeborn avenue including a drug store and four small stores. Tenants faced loss with four families left homeless and total damage around twenty thousand dollars, partly insured. Nearby towns aided but arrived too late to stop the flames.
