Ohio Troops and the War Readiness for Cuba

A Columbus dispatch to the Cleveland Leader outlines Ohio's militia strength for possible war with Spain. About 6,000 men in 100 companies, with a full war strength of 10,100, could be assembled within a day. In a Spain scenario heading to Havana, troops could reach Miami or a southern Florida point in two days, and by four days could be on Cuban soil, conditions permitting no naval obstruction. Adjutant General Axtine notes no orders to recruit or augment the militia have been issued, and the guard remains on a peace basis.
