Louis H Beauchamp of Hamilton did not lecture on The Sunny Side as planned at the Dalton school hall. Illness was announced but Beauchamp blamed catarrh and sought a stimulant, arguing he would still give the lecture. The audience left as the committee dismissed the event.
A Wooster special reports jubilee rally day as Andrew Carnegie pledges $100,000 toward rebuilding after the December fire. L. H. Severance adds $50,000 for a fireproof two story science hall. Work on new structures starts March 15 as donors rush funds to complete the county and trustee pledges.
The Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Transue hosted the opening of the A. M. E. Zion church parsonage with gifts of coffee tea sugar fruits pickles preserves canned goods ham and flour and $20.40 in cash. A large crowd filled the church prompting an early adjournment. Speakers included Robert A. Ping W. H. Brannan and Rev. Mr. Bell. Transue thanks Massillon and Canton for support and patronage.
The Rev. George Darsie Jr of Connersville Indiana accepts a unanimous call to lead the Church of Christ in Massillon. He plans to leave Connersville by April and will decide his exact departure time soon. The recommendation came from the Rev GC Smith of Cincinnati. Darsie is a young married man with no children.
Washington reports the census bureau values all domestic animals in the United States at about 2.2 billion dollars with total livestock on farms and ranges at 2.98 billion. Gains occur across most regions, led by the South Central and North Central divisions, while North Atlantic shows a decline in horses sheep and swine. Texas and Town lead regional livestock value. the report notes population shifts including a 11 percent rise in wool-bearing sheep since 1890. Dr. Wood's Norway Pine Syrup advertised as a cough remedy accompanies the notice.
Local grocers report eggs nearly impossible to obtain with prices up to 32 cents a dozen. Oysters also scarce as supply dwindles. prices rise to 20 cents per quart. Massillon stores and Canton area merchants struggle to fill orders as cold storage stocks run out and buyers travel to Cleveland and Toledo for supplies. The shortage likely lasts until ice breaks up.
James Parr, visiting Cleveland from Buffalo, seeks a title rematch with champion Tom Jenkins and offers $1,000 on the mat. He plans a Buffalo salon and wrestling on the side, predicts victories over Sharkey and McLeod, and claims to have defeated about thirty Buffalo-area wrestlers in five weeks. Parr refuses stage offers despite regional buzz.
In Youngstown on Feb 22 the United States Steel Corporation swore in a detective force at the National Steel Company plant to guard property and coordinate with management. No one is admitted to the works without an office pass and employees may not leave during work hours except by order from superiors.
Columbus February 22 testimony in a mandamus case of Conrad C Frenzel auditor of Tuscarawas and ten other eastern Ohio counties against State Senator GC Connell concerns apportioning railroad rolling stock value by mileage in each county. Witnesses say auditors based appraisement on rolling stock used on current branches, which the relator claims illegal. The counties named include Cuyahoga Mount Mahoning Portage Stark Summit and Jefferson.
Washington, Feb. 22. During Senator Tillman’s remarks on the Philippine tariff bill, he accused a colleague of improper means to obtain the treaty. Senator Spooner denounced the claim as a lie, a fight followed with chairs and blows, and police and sergeants-at-arms intervened as the chamber cleared amid a tumultuous scene.
On the way to Washington from Giraton Massachusetts the Roosevelt party travels with a sick youth and siblings. They leave Groton in a covered sleigh to a ready private car Convoy for transfer to Providence and then the Federal Express. A light snow falls as the departure goes largely unobserved.
Louisville bettors quote two to one on McGovern tonight while Sullivan and backers show confidence. McGovern, arriving from Cincinnati, weighed in at Spain as the main event is set for 9:16 with preliminaries likely to start around 10:15. Also a classified ad seeks a husband and wife to tend horses on a Canton area farm near Massillon.

London reports Miss Ellen M. Stone, the American missionary in captivity, seen with twenty five armed brigands in the Bordagh mountains near Seres. Dragoman M Gargiulo remains in Constantinople as fears grow of an encounter between brigands and troops and possible danger to the captives.
A devastating fire in New York City killed eighteen people and injured many as flames swept from the Armory of the Seventy First Regiment to the adjacent Park Avenue hotel. Rescue teams fought through smoke to reach guests trapped on upper floors, with deaths concentrated around the elevator shaft. The incident caused extensive property damage, with losses estimated near one million dollars.
Akron February 22 Friends of James Wachner who suffered brutal treatment by upperclassmen at Buchtel College will not press arrests if the college faculty punishes the assailants with severity. The involvement of two professor sons emerges as both fathers and faculty members pledge strict action to protect the institution.
New York reports twenty four hours of snow rain and high winds creating the worst weather of the winter. Telegraph and telephone poles are down and trolley lines in many areas are halted. Morning rain produces heavy slush hindering traffic.
