Eight Tramps Sentenced by Mayor Schott at Workhouse
Eight vagrants were fined ten dollars plus costs and sent to the workhouse after arrests near the rolling mill by Officers Getz Seaman Truittu Er Ue. One man faced an assault charge for trying to strike a patron at a North Street saloon when he refused aid. Two others were jailed on vagrancy charges but discharged after giving credible stories. A youth named Joseph Johnson attended a masquerade Thursday night, became disorderly and paid one dollar and costs this morning.

Explosion of Gas at Howells Mine Ends in Burned Miner
An explosion of gas at the Howells mine near East Greenville occurred about 3 a.m. Friday. John Schwartz, 22, of West Brookfield, was badly burned while clearing gas when a fellow miner’s unprotected lamp ignited it. Superintendent Matthew English of East Greenville reported the incident. Schwartz’s condition remained serious. The blast blew inward and the other miner escaped with minor burns.
